Licensed Practical Nurses

There are over 2,500 active Licensed Practical Nursing licenses in Delaware.

Education and Licensure

    • Licensed Practical Nurses are graduates of a State Board of Nursing approved practical nursing education program.
    • Upon completion of a practical nursing education program, graduates must pass a standard national examination for practical nursing to obtain their license.
    • Licensure is renewed every two years with the requirement of 24 continuing education hours, including 3 in the area of substance abuse.
    • Practical Nursing Education Programs in Delaware:
        • Delaware Skills Center
        • Delaware Technical & Community College - Owens and Terry campuses
        • Polytech Adult Education

Practice Settings

Licensed Practical Nurses work collaboratively in numerous practice settings including, but not limited to:

    • Hospitals
    • Ambulatory clinics and medical offices
    • Home health
    • Long term care
    • Rehabilitation, including drug and alcohol
    • Correctional facilities


    • Licensed Practical Nurses work collaboratively in the healthcare team and receive direct supervision from Registered Nurses and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses.

    • Persons currently or looking to become licensed as a LPN should review information and full licensure requirements at the Delaware Board of Nursing.
